Outreach

Through our outreach programs, our congregation shares our time, talents, and financial resources with others. Our mission and outreach programs are one of the core ways we act out our faith, believing fully in Jesus' vision of caring for all in the community, especially those who are unable to care for themselves. Often we find that while sharing our abundance, we meet a welcoming community in return. The Outreach Commission organizes and promotes the hands-on ministry, awareness-building and advocacy opportunities for our Church members, from the youngest to the oldest. The Outreach Commission also distributes funds to organizations that help those in need.

Through 2008 we are centering our energies and resources in two areas:

• Alleviating homelessness; and,
• Helping women, teens, and children at risk

While these are important issues, we continue to support those institutions we have a long history with. The First Congregational Church has been faithful to our commitment to help others. We as a congregation have "reached out" with our hearts and hands by:

• Building homes with Habitat for Humanity
• Making school kits for children in hurricane-ravaged areas
• Collecting food for the food pantry at the Woburn Council for Social Concern
• Cooking meals at the Dwelling Place
• Writing letters to urge legislation to relieve world hunger
• Giving Christmas gifts to homeless women at Rosie's Place in Boston, children of low-income families in the Woburn area, and troubled girls at Germaine Lawrence in Arlington
• Participating in mission trips to Washington, DC and New Orleans

In addition to our many annual programs, we work with our members to add new ones every year, which makes for a busy and rich year of giving. We welcome new ideas and new passions. Please contact a member of the Outreach Commission with any suggestions that you may have.
