Music

"Art is not an end in itself. It introduces the soul into a higher spiritual order, which it expresses and in some cases explains. Music and art and poetry attune the soul to God because they induce a kind of contact with the Creator."
--Thomas Merton, Monk and poet [1915-1968]

First Congregational Church, Winchester, believes that music has the power to provide beauty and inspiration, to set a mood conducive to worship, to further scripture and prayer within the service, to unite and inspire the congregation through choral singing and congregational singing. Music serves a function of glorifying God - an aid to worship - a reflection of God's Word. It is a form of communicating, a very personal method of receiving and giving thoughts and feelings; places where words are not enough. We have a long tradition of enjoying music in many different styles and are blessed with a talented organist, Jeffrey Mead, who graces our C.B. Fisk, opus 50, 1969 pipe organ.

Special Musical Services

Advent Lessons and Carols, a musical highlight of the Christmas season and intergenerational feast of song.

Cantata Sunday, the Senior Choir presents a moving and prayerful Lenten Cantata offering.

At First Congregational Church, we consider our music to be a very important part of the worship service. Therefore, we offer the children and adults of this congregation the opportunity to serve as musicians. The music program is designed for participation by as many individuals as possible within the church family.

Volunteer Opportunities

If you have skills in directing hand bells or vocal choirs, and would enjoy working with young people, we would be pleased to hear from you. Volunteers are particularly needed in the areas of Youth Bells (grades 7-12), Youth Singers and Junior Bells (Grades 3-6).
