Education

Children in preschool through 5th grade begin the morning in church with their families, and stay through the Time for the Young. They will be formally dismissed from the service to begin their church school class. Parents should accompany younger children to their classrooms, and meet them there after the service. If you are new, signs and other helpful parents will gladly direct you.

Our church school has 3 trimesters. The Fall and Spring terms are taught by a teaching team of 2 adult volunteer teachers, and often a teen helper. Teachers use Invitation Bible Studies curriculum, using a variety of activities and active lesson plans to meet the needs of different learning styles. Fifth Graders use a curriculum designed especially for them called Tweens in Transition.

Musical Opportunities

Children of all ages are involved in music at the First Congregational Church.

Cherub Choir
The Cherub Choir is a wonderful introduction to music for our littlest singers. This choir is for preschoolers through 2nd graders, and is led by Pam McPherson with assistance from our high school youth. The cherub choir practices before an event during their church school time.

Junior Choir
The Junior choir, for children in 3rd-5th grade, makes joyful noise during several services each year. They practice before the service and are led by Cindy Wankowicz.

For more information contact our Music Director Jane Ring Frank.

Fellowship

Coffee Hour:
After worship every Sunday Juice and snacks are served at coffee hour, and in good weather children often go outside to play on the playground. In colder weather, kids have just as much fun socializing in Chidley hall!

Family Potluck Suppers:
Second Thursday of the month, Chidley Hall Come enjoy the company of other families at this informal event held on the Second Thursday of each month in Chidley Hall. All ages and friends welcome. Bring something to share. Homemade or tore-bought are welcome! For more information, contact Meg Shin (781-538-5115) or Jena Roy (781-729-2520).

Winter term, our program for January and February, is our variation of the rotational teaching method. First through 5th graders are mixed together into project-based groups where learning occurs through project completion. Preschoolers and kindergartners have their own groups featuring age-appropriate activities. A theme is developed for each winter term, and each project furthers learning about that theme. Children can choose each week which project they would like to attend. Ancient carpentry, baking, and acting tend to be perennial favorite projects!

Special Activities

3rd Grade Bible
Each fall students entering Third Grade are presented with a bible with their names engraved inside during a special ceremony in the worship service. Students receive the New Revised Standard Version Bible.

Accolytes
Starting in 3rd grade children are invited to serve as acolytes, leading the choir and ministers in the processional, lighting the candles at the front of the church and extinguishing them after the service. Contact Carol Jones if your child is interested in serving as an acolyte.

Church School Sunday
In June, the Church School leads the congregation in worship. Students, teachers, and helpers create and lead a special service celebrating the energies and creativity of our children. Church School Sunday is a much-anticipated congregational event!

Service

Church School Service Month
The month of March is Church School Service Month, where each of our elementary school classes does a service project to benefit the church.

Little Red Wagon
Children are often involved in gathering food for the Little Red Wagon, our collection of food for a local food pantry.

The Dwelling Place
Children and their families often sign up to cook and serve dinner at The Dwelling Place.

Please see our For Parents section for more information about our Church School.
